A home sauna or cold plunge is a big purchase, and most of the questions that matter aren't on the spec sheet. This guide walks you through the decisions in the order that saves the most time and money.

1. Pick the type that fits how you'll use it

  • Infrared sauna: uses infrared panels to warm you directly at a lower air temperature. Usually indoors, often plugs into a standard outlet, and heats up quickly.
  • Traditional (Finnish) sauna: a heater warms the air and stones, and you can pour water on the stones for steam. Hotter air, classic feel. Comes in outdoor barrel, cabin, and cube styles, plus indoor kits.
  • Cold plunge tub: a tub with a built-in chiller that holds the water at a set cold temperature, so you don't need bags of ice.

2. Size it by people, not by looks

Think about how many people will use it at the same time. A 2-person unit fits one person lying down or two sitting. If friends or family will join, size up one step. Check the interior dimensions and bench layout, not just the exterior footprint.

3. Measure your space and check your base

  • Measure the spot, the ceiling height (indoor units), and every gate, door, and turn on the path from the street.
  • Outdoor units need a solid, level base: a concrete pad, pavers, or a deck rated for the weight.
  • Cold plunge tubs weigh far more once they're full of water. Make sure the floor or patio can carry it.

4. Know your power before you buy

  • Many infrared saunas and cold plunge tubs plug into a standard 110V outlet. A dedicated circuit is often recommended.
  • Most traditional saunas with electric heaters must be hardwired by a licensed electrician, and the heater size (kW) needs to match the sauna.
  • Wood-burning heaters need no electricity but do need a chimney, safe clearances, and a check of local codes.
  • Get an electrician's quote early. It's often the biggest surprise in the budget.

5. Understand freight delivery

These products ship by freight truck to your curb, not inside your home. Some sauna kits arrive in wooden crates weighing well over 1,000 lbs. Plan who will unload it and how: a liftgate (if the crate is short enough), a forklift, a crew of helpers, or picking it up at the freight terminal. Always inspect the delivery and note any damage on the delivery receipt before you sign.

6. Budget for the full project

Beyond the unit itself, many buyers also pay for:

  • An electrician (for heaters and hardwired units)
  • A base pad or deck work
  • Help with unloading and assembly
  • Accessories such as a bucket and ladle, covers, or water treatment for cold plunges

7. Questions to ask any seller before you order

  • Are you an authorized dealer for this brand?
  • What is the current estimated build and ship time?
  • What exactly happens on delivery day, and who unloads it?
  • What's your cancellation and damage policy?
  • What does the manufacturer's warranty cover, and who handles a claim?
  • Will someone help me choose the right size before I buy?
