How to Prepare Your Yard for an Outdoor Sauna

An outdoor sauna is easy to enjoy once it's set up, but a little planning before delivery day saves time, money, and stress. Use this step-by-step checklist to get your yard ready.

1. Choose the right spot

  • Pick a flat area with room around the sauna for access and airflow.
  • Keep it close enough to the house that you'll actually use it in winter, and within reach of your electrical service if you're choosing an electric heater.
  • For wood-burning heaters, check local codes for chimney clearances and distance from other structures.
  • Check with your town or HOA about permits or setback rules before you order.

2. Build a solid, level base

Your sauna needs a firm, level foundation. Common options include:

  • Concrete pad: the most durable and level option.
  • Pavers or patio stones: set on a compacted gravel base.
  • A deck: only if a contractor confirms it can carry the weight. Outdoor saunas can weigh well over 1,000 lbs before anyone steps inside.

Make the base slightly larger than the sauna's footprint, which is listed on each product page.

3. Plan the power

Most electric sauna heaters must be hardwired on a dedicated circuit by a licensed electrician, and doing it any other way can void the heater warranty. Get an electrician's quote early. It's often the biggest surprise in the budget. Ask them to confirm the heater's kW rating against your electrical service.

4. Plan the delivery

Outdoor saunas ship by freight truck, usually a large 18-wheeler, to the curb or the end of your driveway. The driver won't back into your driveway or carry anything to your yard.

  • Make sure a large truck can reach your street and turn around.
  • Check the crate size on the product page. Crates up to 84 inches long can usually use the truck's liftgate. Longer crates need a forklift with fork extensions, a trailer pickup at the local freight terminal, a rented tilt-tow truck, or a crew of helpers to unpack the crate on the truck.
  • Answer the freight company's calls promptly to book your delivery window.
  • Walk the path from the curb to your base and measure gates, slopes, and turns.

5. Delivery day

  1. Inspect the crate before signing.
  2. Note any damage on the delivery receipt (Bill of Lading) and take photos.
  3. Contact your retailer within 48 hours if anything is damaged.

6. Assembly

Most outdoor sauna kits are designed for two people to assemble with basic tools, following the manufacturer's manual. Set aside a day or a weekend, and have your electrician ready to connect the heater once the sauna is built.

Quick checklist

  • Spot chosen and permits checked
  • Level base built
  • Electrician booked
  • Truck access confirmed
  • Unloading plan in place
  • Helpers lined up for assembly
